Definition
Terra is a named tier in OpenAI's GPT family, introduced with GPT-5.6 as a balance between capability and cost. The documented model identifier is gpt-5.6-terra. OpenAI's model page roughly maps its role to the mini tier of earlier GPT-5 families.
The tier name describes an intended tradeoff. Its model size and architecture need separate documentation, and its success rate needs task-specific measurement. Mini names from other providers or generations are not universal synonyms for Terra.
Origin
OpenAI announced GPT-5.6 Terra in the June 26, 2026 limited preview that also introduced Sol and Luna. The announcement called Terra a balanced model for everyday work. Later GPT generations need their own documented release identities; the naming pattern alone does not establish a GPT-6 Terra model.
Scope and limits
The GPT-5.6 Terra documentation lists text input and output, image input, and configurable reasoning effort. Tool support and output formats depend on the selected API and model version. A familiar tier name cannot substitute for checking those interfaces during a migration.
Operational significance
Evaluate the model on the work that would actually reach it. A middle-tier price can be useful when output quality meets the acceptance rule, but token rates alone do not measure completed-task cost. Count retries and review, and specify when the application should escalate to another route.
Record the full identifier in model-routing policy and evaluation results. If a provider retires or replaces a release, compare the replacement under the same harness and acceptance criteria before updating the route.
Distinguish it from nearby terms
- Sol and Luna are other named GPT tiers; they are separate model choices.
- A small language model describes model scale, which the Terra name alone does not establish.
- Model routing selects among deployed models; Terra can be one destination.
- Useful intelligence per dollar measures verified work against cost, rather than assuming a tier's advertised position guarantees value.
Check your understanding
A routing configuration contains only the value "Terra." What additional identifier and evaluation evidence would make that route reproducible and suitable for a future model replacement?
