Understanding, not code, is becoming the bottleneck for agent-driven work

As more of the world becomes "agent-addressable," Schillace argues, code production stops constraining software work. Human attention and comprehension take its place. He describes a "Cognitive Operating System," the layer that mediates what people attend to and understand while deciding what is cheap and convenient for them to think. "Understanding is the real bottleneck," he writes, and "you can outsource your thinking, but you cannot outsource understanding."

Why it matters: Teams handing more implementation to agents still need someone to understand the resulting software well enough to trust it. Cheaper code production does not make that work cheaper.
