Garry Tan's "domain-specific harness" term draws scrutiny from an agent builder

Tan quote-tweeted an observation from a YC demo day attendee posting as @goodhartproof: "I was just at YC demo day yesterday. Besides hardware/physical things, everyone is just basically just building a domain-specific harness." Tan's own post reached 684,600 views, 3,400 likes, and 269 reposts about 19 hours after he posted it on September 12. Two days later, the counts remained at 3,400 likes and 269 reposts.
The next day, Dex Horthy, co-founder of HumanLayer and a CodeLayer engineer, questioned the term in a reply: "not that I disagree, but is 'domain specific harness' just a rebrand of 'ai agent'? What's different? ... FWIW this may be a good thing. 'Agent' was very semantically diffused, different meaning for everyone."
Why it matters: Horthy's reply shows that "domain-specific harness" does not yet have a shared technical meaning. Anyone using it in a pitch, job post, or specification should define it explicitly.
