GPT-5.5 retires from Codex on October 14, with replacements named
OpenAI's changelog says GPT-5.5 will retire from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex on October 14, 2026, on all plans including consumer, Business, Enterprise, and Edu. The retirement does not apply to the OpenAI API. The entry tells users to update "workspace defaults, saved model settings, managed configurations, custom agents, scheduled tasks, and scripts" that still select gpt-5.5.
The models page names the replacements for Codex with ChatGPT sign-in. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans are pointed to GPT-6 Sol (gpt-6-sol) "when available". Free and Go plans are pointed to GPT-6 Luna (gpt-6-luna) in the desktop app, also "when available". Neither page says whether those models are available today, so we have not checked that they are.
The same changelog records two earlier cutoffs of this kind: GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark was deprecated on September 14, and GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 mini left Codex with ChatGPT sign-in on August 31.
Why it matters: An unattended factory that pins a model name will fail on the cutoff date, not before it. Scheduled tasks and custom agents are the likeliest to be forgotten because nobody opens them. Search your configs for gpt-5.5 now, and note that OpenAI says the retirement does not apply to the API.
