# In the News: October 18, 2026 (Morning)

DeepSeek has put a price on the web access its agents use, and the free period ends on November 1. A small open-source Git hook that quizzes you on agent-written code before a push is also in the feed.

## 1. DeepSeek bills agent web search and fetch at $0.75 per 1,000 successful requests

**[Search & Fetch](https://api-docs.deepseek.com/guides/search/)** · DeepSeek API Docs · October 2026

DeepSeek's documentation describes two raw JSON endpoints, Search and Fetch, for "agents and RAG applications." Search runs on DeepSeek's in-house search engine and takes a query of 1 to 128 characters; Fetch returns a single page as Markdown. Both are billed at $0.75 per 1,000 successful requests, and a request counts only if it returns HTTP 200 with a non-empty result, so failures, empty searches and timeouts are free. Each endpoint is limited to 5 requests per second per account, and Fetch also has a per-domain limit.

The docs add a dated note: when the DeepSeek API is used through DeepSeek Harness, Claude Code or Codex, the server-side tool calls already hit these APIs and are currently free. Per-request billing starts at 00:00 Beijing time on November 1, 2026.

The Hacker News thread was at 219 points and 102 comments about four hours after posting. Commenters supplied their own comparisons, which we have not checked: one put Brave at $5 per 1,000 searches and Kagi at $12, another said Exa is $4 and SERP API $1.50. Others questioned how the service handles Cloudflare and Anubis bot challenges, and one asked how good the results are at all. The guide page says nothing on either point.

**Why it matters:** If you run coding agents against DeepSeek models through Claude Code, Codex or DeepSeek Harness, web lookups stop being free on November 1, so a research-heavy agent loop acquires a per-call cost it did not have. At the listed rate, 100 fetches in one run is about 7.5 cents, small per run but additive across a factory. The page gives prices and limits only; it makes no claim about result quality, and we did not call the API.

- **[Sphinx](https://sphinx-six-theta.vercel.app/)** · Show HN, sphinx-six-theta.vercel.app · A free, open-source Git hook that, on a protected-branch push, has a separate reviewer read the diff and ask what the change does when things go wrong, and lets the push continue only after you answer. The project page lists support for Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode and Pi, and a `sphinx yolo` mode that lets pushes through and logs each skip. The page's example exchange is labeled illustrative, and we have not seen evidence that it catches misunderstanding in practice.
