Introducing tsrs: a Port of TypeScript to Rust · Boshen Chen, Dimitri Mitropoulos and Christoph Nakazawa · Cloudflare Blog, October 20, 2026
Cloudflare and VoidZero will use agents to keep a Rust TypeScript port in sync with upstream
The post says Cloudflare and VoidZero are working with Max Schwenk of Owner.com on tsrs, in collaboration with the TypeScript team, and incubating it inside the Oxc toolchain. It reports that tsrs is up to 8x faster and uses about 70% less memory than TypeScript 7.0 at the same number of type-check workers, and that TypeScript 7.1 beta is already up to 2.5x faster than 7.0, partly from optimizations upstreamed from tsrs. The authors say large-scale ports by frontier models can now take days, and that the TypeScript port is being merged with Theo Browne's tsc-rs.
The maintenance plan is the part that matters here. The authors say they will reuse the process they run for Vinext, their Next.js reimplementation: each morning an agent reviews upstream changes, fetches diffs and opens tracking issues, and each night the compatibility matrix is regenerated by running upstream's test suite against the port. They say agents can then locate a gap across both codebases, build a reproduction, port the tests and propose a fix. They state that they will apply this to TypeScript.
Why it matters: The hard part of an agent-written port is keeping it faithful after day one, and this is a named vendor's stated answer: a daily agent diff review plus a nightly run of the upstream test suite as the oracle. The benchmarks are the authors' own, and we did not examine the charts or run the package. The sync process is a plan for TypeScript, so its results there are not yet known.
